The Parish of San Luis Gonzaga is an architectural landmark of the Modern and American colonies.
It was built by the architect Enrique de la Mora and it is an iconic building of modern architecture in Guadalajara, for its unique features and morphology. Last but not least, it is also an important religious gathering center for the local population.
In recent years, natural processes of deterioration and recurrent vandalism have affected its outside walls. As a result, its splendor has declined.
MIGRATION PROJECT AND MONUMENTAL MURALS
Last year we developed a project on Central-American migrants in the Guadalajara metropolitan area. As a result, we painted a mural on the façade of this Parish in Avenida Niño Héroes, in collaboration with the international artist Jupiterfab.
The church was beautified and we stopped the problem of graffiti on that wall.
This year we decided to continue the work covering all the four walls of the church talking about refugees living in Guadalajara.
The goal is to get the church to its old splendor and to create possible collaboration between the local inhabitants and migrants in the area.
We are beginning the work in 29th August. Painting the walls in Avenida Alemania and Calle Colonias, for a total of more than 300 m2.
The murals are just one part of a project that began a couple of months ago. We already interviewed refugees staying at the shelters for migrants, FM4 and El Refugio, two of the largest in the city.
The audio interviews were edited and uploaded to the project's webpage, www.tusraices.net. These interviews will be connected to the murals throughout QR codes on their walls.
The murals will show the suffering and the resilience, concepts that stand out in all the interviews.
After finishing the mural, we will run a round table in the church’s auditorium inviting to talk directors of FM4, El Refugio and Casa Scalabrini shelters, as much as professor. Eduardo González Velázquez, expert on migration in the state of Jalisco and teacher at University TEC de Monterrey.
We are working in partnership with FM4, Casa Scalabrini, El Refugio, but also with ACNUR (UN Refugee Agency), GIZ German Cooperative, Corporativa de fundaciones and Comex.
HELP AND PRESENTS
Luckily, we found most of the funds necessary to complete the project, but we still need a small amount. We hope you can help us accomplish this task, which will not only rehabilitate the exterior walls of the church, but also, the environment of the area. In exchange we are offering international TAX DEDUCTIBLE RECEIPT as much as original artworks of the artist Jupiterfab, coordinator and artist of the project.
